W niejasnych okolicznościach Daland spotkał też człowieka, który przedstawił się jako Holender. Po udanych interesach i okazyjnym zakupie diamentów Daland postanowił powierzyć Holendrowi rękę swej pięknej córki Senty. Dziewczyna od lat owładnięta jest obsesją Holendra tułacza – okrętu błądzącego po ocenach i sprowadzającego na żeglarzy nieszczęście. Okazuje się jednak, że mężczyzna, któremu Daland oddał córkę, to właśnie kapitan przeklętych żeglarzy. Nie doświadczy on upragnionej śmierci, dopóki nie spotka wiernej i oddanej kobiety. Senta postanawia go zbawić. Niestety, Holender to żywy trup, a ślub z trupem możliwy jest tylko poprzez śmierć. Gdy statek Holendra wpływa w mgłę, dziewczyna rzuca się ze skały w morze i ostatecznie uwalnia ukochanego od znienawidzonego życia.

The Flying Dutchman (Der fliegende Holländer) is one of the most frequently staged operas by the German Romantic era composer Richard Wagner. The spectacular large-scale production to open at the Forest Opera in Sopot boasts a lineup of prominent soloists and a breathtaking set design. The ship of a Norwegian captain, Daland, enters the harbour. The seaman is returning home empty-handed but with an extraordinary adventure under his belt. While at sea, his ship was approached by a vessel manned by a mysterious crew of pale sailors who asked Daland to take their letters. In unexplained circumstances, Darland also met a man who introduced himself as Dutchman. Having struck a deal with him to buy diamonds at a bargain price, Daland decided to give his beautiful daughter, Senta, to the Dutchman in marriage. The girl is already obsessed with the legendary Flying Dutchman. It turns out the man whom Daland promised his daughter’s hand is the captain of the cursed vessel. He cannot find relief in death until he meets a faithful and loyal woman. Senta decides to bring him salvation. Sadly, the Dutchman is a dead man walking and marrying him is possible only through death. When the Dutchman’s ship enters heavy fog, the girl throws herself down a cliff, thus freeing her beloved from the life he despises.
